Amsterdam is getting ready for something big. From 25 July to 8 August, the city hosts WorldPride 2026, the largest LGBTQIA+ event in the world. For two full weeks everything revolves around love, freedom and connection, with the world-famous Canal Parade on Saturday 1 August as its highlight. And that water happens to be where we feel most at home.
Why this year is extra special
Pride Amsterdam is a celebration every year, but 2026 is different. WorldPride is awarded to a different host city every few years, following earlier editions in New York, Copenhagen and Sydney. This year it is Amsterdam’s turn, and it coincides with a milestone: 25 years ago, the world’s very first same-sex marriage took place right here. Hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world are expected.
The programme is huge. A Pride Walk from Dam Square to Vondelpark, street parties throughout the city centre, concerts on Museumplein, a Human Rights Conference, and on the Prinsengracht even a WorldPride Stadium with around ten thousand seats that the boat parade sails straight through. Nothing like it has ever been done before.
The Canal Parade: the party is on the water
The beating heart of Pride Amsterdam is and always will be the Canal Parade. On Saturday 1 August, around eighty exuberantly decorated boats sail through the canals, from the Maritime Museum via the Amstel river to the Prinsengracht. Hundreds of thousands of people line the quays, bridges and balconies to watch.
It is no coincidence that the biggest party of the year takes place on the water. The canals are Amsterdam’s stage. Nowhere does the city come to life quite like it does there.
Good to know if you are making plans: on parade day itself, the route is closed to other boat traffic and strict rules apply. If you want to moor your own boat along the route, you need a Pride Vignette. So on that day, the best way to watch the parade is from the quayside, a bridge or one of the stands.
Celebrate Pride on the water with your own group
But Pride lasts two full weeks, and that is exactly where it gets interesting. Outside the parade, the canals are open as usual, and the city is at its most beautiful during this period. Rainbow flags everywhere, packed terraces and an atmosphere you will not find at any other time of year.

Practical tips for WorldPride 2026
If you are visiting Amsterdam during WorldPride, be prepared for crowds. A few tips from experience:
Use public transport, as large parts of the city centre will be car-free and parking is nearly impossible on those days. Book restaurants and activities well in advance, especially for the parade weekend. And alongside the big events, plan some quiet moments too. The best Pride memories are often the small ones: a morning walk along the decorated canals before the city wakes up, or an evening on the water as the buzz of the day fades away.
A place for everyone
At its core, WorldPride is about everyone being free to be themselves. That fits Amsterdam, and it fits the way we sail. Everyone is welcome aboard our boat, all year round. But during these two weeks, we celebrate it just a little louder.
